Tax help at River Center in Peterborough

Friday, January 18, 2019 2:52PM

The River Center: A Family and Community Resource Center is once again offering free tax preparation and e-filing for individuals and families with incomes of up to $60,000 through its IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program located at 9 Vose Farm Road, Suite 115 in Peterborough.

In addition to traditional in-person appointments on Saturdays starting at 8:45 am which take about an hour, the program is offering a 2nd method, Drop-Off VITA, designed to save taxpayers time. Taxpayers meet with an intake specialist and leave their documents safely on-site to have their returns prepared. The taxpayer returns for a 2nd appointment in about a week to pick up a hard copy of their return and sign the e-file consent form. Drop-Off VITA typically takes less than 30 minutes over 2 appointments.

“Drop-Off VITA is a more flexible way to prepare returns that benefits both tax payer and the tax preparer. says veteran volunteer tax preparer, Karen Johnson. “Our volunteers are an eager and dedicated group of people who will be happy to help you in preparing your tax return either by face to face or by dropping it off.”

Tax appointments start on January 26, but you can schedule your appointment by calling us at (603) 924-6800 ext. 10 or emailing us at taxes@rivercenter.us and leaving your phone number.

IRS-certified volunteers prepare and e-file returns completely free with no hidden fees or charges. They are up to date on all the current tax law changes and work to help you receive the refund and credits to which you are entitled. The River Center is partnering with Granite United Way in order to offer this service to individuals and families who qualify. Taxpayers with incomes up to $66,000 may use www.MyFreeTaxes.com to prepare and file their own returns for free.

Last year, VITA programs helped put back $7 million in refunds and credits in the pockets of individuals and families across the state.
