Former Assistant Superintendent Kimberly Saunders, who is taking over as superintendent of the ConVal School District, intends to provide a fresh perspective.

After seven years as assistant under Superintendent Brendan Minnihan, Saunders has been named his replacement.

“I think when new leadership comes in, it’s important to look at things with fresh eyes,” she said.

Saunders was chosen from within when the School Board decided recently not to engage in an expensive, time-consuming candidate search.

“We were looking at the work that was ahead of us, including the strategic plan, and we needed to get working on it,” School Board Chair Myron Steere said. “She has all the experience, has all the background, knows all the players.”

Saunders is also concerned with the strategic plan, a multi-faceted outline the district uses to project its short and long-term goals.

“It’s about creating a unified vision for the district,” she said.

As assistant superintendent, Saunders said, she was primarily responsible for curriculum, instruction and assessment, crafting policy relating to those areas.

Before that seven-year tenure at ConVal, Saunders was a high school principal, assistant principal, curriculum coordinator and teacher, making her familiar with many roles that will help her as superintendent.

“I have experience in the classroom and in multiple administrative positions,” she said.

After Minnihan announced his resignation last fall, Saunders assumed a lot of the district workload.

“She did great work during the transition,” Steere said.

Minnihan’s resignation was effective June 30, and earlier this year Saunders was tabbed to become interim superintendent, effective July 1. On July 12, she informed on that she was being offered a three year contract.

Her starting salary will be $135,000, which is $5,000 less than Minnihan was making when he left, according to Steere.

“She’s somebody that will lay out the plans, get the people involved who need to be involved,” Steere said. “She’s an organizer.”
