The New Hampshire Youth Poet Laureate Committee announced the names of two young poets who will represent the State in 2019-20 through the prestigious Youth Poet Laureate program. Peterborough’s Rachel Sturges, a rising senior at Contoocook Valley Regional High School, will serve in an honorary one-year position and act as an ambassador to heighten the visibility and value of poetry by and for young people in New Hampshire.

Sturges’ poetry was recently published through the Avenue A Teen Center’s WriteOut! Project – a local initiative that won a National Endowment for the Arts award. She was also selected to attend the Breadloaf Young Writers Conference at Middlebury College and the New England Young Writers Conference at Champlain College.

Sturges’ award letter reads, “Committee members are impressed by your excellent vision for the role, specifically utilizing social media; prior commitment to attending young writers conferences; and belief that poetry can help us understand our lives. Your superior, crafted poetry contains imagery with emotion embodied in it, rather than simply talking about feelings; in other words, it looks outward from the self rather than simply at the self.”

Falon Smith of Littleton High School is also an award recipient. The New Hampshire Youth Poet Laureate Committee shared that it was “thoroughly astounded by the poetry, support letters, and ideas shared by each of the candidates.”
