The 49th annual Dublin Gas Engine Meet is planned for Sept. 10-12 at Cricket Hill Farm off Route 101 in Dublin. Antique engines and engine enthusiasts from all over the country will travel to Dublin to see one of the largest gas engine meets in New England. After being canceled last year due to coronavirus concerns, this year is expected to have a large turnout, organizer Dave Whitney said.

There will be food vendors, an eating area, and even a scaled-down 500-foot railroad track with a running steam engine to keep patrons sustained and entertained all weekend. Antique gas engines as old as the early 1900s will be on display, and most of the tractors, cars, and trucks are still in working order.

The Dublin Gas Engine Meet was originally put on by the Dublin Fire Department as a much smaller display next to Yankee Magazine off the Dublin Town Circle. It only lasted three years there before a larger venue had to be found and the meet has only grown in size since. The organization that now coordinates the weekend is a nonprofit.

There is a $5 per person admission fee, and kids 12 and under can get into the event for free. Whitney said Saturday is usually the busiest day of the weekend and 3,000 spectators are expected over the course of the three days. It is a rain-or-shine event with plenty of exhibitors offering glimpses into old and interesting machines, selling souvenirs, and giving demonstrations.

The 20 or so organizers who spend all year preparing for the Dublin Gas Engine Meet do it for the community, Whitney said, explaining that his interest in gas engines started from a very young age when his bus driver was involved with the event. Whitney said he used to sit up front asking questions the whole ride.

“My bus driver gave me an engine when I was 11,” Whitney said, “and the rest is history.”
