For Bradley Hector, being a member of the Boy Scouts of America has always been about learning about and having opportunities to help the broader community.

Hector, 18, of Jaffrey, recently obtained the rank of Eagle Scout – the highest rank of achievement in the program – by helping to erect signs describing important people buried in the town’s Conant and Phillips-Heil cemeteries in town, which will be used by the cemetery committee and others during walking tours of the cemeteries.

“It’s cool to know I had a big hand in making something that will have an impact and be there for a while,” Hector said. “ I definitely couldn’t have done it without a lot of help.”

Hectors’ entry into the project began with a love of history and an appreciation of his local cemeteries, as Hector usually plays Taps on Memorial Day in the cemeteries.

“I thought it would help bring more recognition to the local cemeteries,” Hector said. “… if the cemetery committee wants be t make more sign frames, I’m willing to help.”

The project entailed the installation of two posts with a frame at each cemetery location. The signs, created by Archetype Signworks of Peterborough, has brief descriptions of important people in the cemeteries and a map.

“The biggest challenge was getting everyone together, I’ve never done something like this before,” Hector said. “It wasn’t that difficult to manage, because everyone was super helpful, friendly, and willing to give a hand, but organizing everything at times was stressful.”

Hector said all the materials for the project were donated.
