‘Live free or die, but don’t get high’ seems to be the new state motto now that Granite Staters have found themselves surrounded by fellow New England states – Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts – as well as the country of Canada, which are all now much more lenient than New Hampshire when it comes to marijuana.

New Hampshire allows for medical use of marijuana and decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana in 2017. While many, including Gov. Chris Sununu, are happy with the balance struck in New Hampshire allowing for medicinal marijuana and not treating marijuana as a hard drug, political pressure is mounting to legalize marijuana completely, allowing for recreational use. Sununu voiced his opposition to recreational marijuana last year and referred to it as big tobacco 2.0, but a bill legalizing recreational marijuana is likely to hit Sununu’s desk this year.

So where do you stand? How do other residents of the Monadnock Region feel about this issue?

As part of our ongoing commitment to community dialogue, the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript co-sponsors quarterly Community Conversations with the Monadnock Center for History and Cultural. Because this is such an important issue to ponder, our first Community Conversation of 2019 will focus on this very question: should New Hampshire legalize cannabis for recreational use?

The Community Conversations is planned to take place Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.

The program is free and open to all, so please come and voice your opinion on the issue.

We here at the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript believe that now is the time to make a decision on this topic in order to move forward, but believe all sides should be heard and considered first. So please read our Viewpoints on this issue, do your own research and come to the conversation next Tuesday. And if you have come to a decision on this question, please let us know by taking our online poll at www.ledgertranscript.com. The results of this poll are to be announced at the Community Conversation.
