A community group is gearing up to ensure that no ConVal student goes hungry throughout the weekend.

Linda Caracappa, one of the founders of the recently formed branch of End 68 Hours of Hunger, said Tuesday that the group is ready to start packing meals that needy students can take home during the weekends.

“We can’t start the first week of school because the space that the SAU gave us is still being renovated and because the school has to hand out releases to the students,” said Caracappa. “I think we’ve had a great response though. We are excited to get started.”

End 68 Hours of Hunger is a not-for-profit organization that anonymously provides three dinners, two breakfasts, and two lunches to students who might not have food at home to eat. Caracappa said there are about 150-160 students who could benefit from this program at ConVal.

The group has been ramping up over the summer, gathering volunteers and soliciting support from churches and other organizations. Many churches in the district have agreed to collect specific items for the meals, including peanut butter and tuna.

After the space is renovated and the releases have been filled out, the group will begin packing bags and sending them home with students every weekend. To start, the goal is to have 3,000 calories in each bag, containing items like cereal, mac and cheese, cans of tuna, and other canned goods.
