Jaffrey Grade School recently held a “Penny War” to raise money for the animals affected by the Australia bushfires.

For a week in January, students brought pennies and other money into the school to place in jars, each labeled with a classroom name. Students placed pennies in their own class jars to raise their score, and added other coins and dollar bills into other class jars to lower their scores. At the end of the week, each class jar was emptied, pennies were counted and then coins and bills were subtracted from the total.

As a school, JGS raised $655.09, which will be sent to the Koala Hospital Port Macquarie.

The winning class, Ms. Slovenkai’s first grade class, had a total score of $21.76 – $30.36 in pennies and $8.60 in non-pennies. The class was awarded a stuffed koala in Harley Davidson gear named Lewis after one of the koalas who was severely burned in the fire.

Fourth/Fifth Grade Teacher Lynda Morgan Cooper was the one who organized the fundraiser. Her class counted the money and was learning about the animals affected by the bushfires and researched animal charities.
