The Mason School District, which serves Mason Elementary School’s students from kindergarten to fifth grade and funds residents’ education in the Milford system, is holding its annual deliberative session this Saturday, Feb. 4.

The proposed operating budget for 2017-2018 is $3,166,237.12, an increase of 1.56 percent compared to the adopted budget for the current school year.

The school board will present the budget and other warrant articles at the hearing. Residents can discuss and amend proposals. The deliberative session is the last opportunity to do so before the proposals go to the ballot.

Should the proposed budget fail, the default budget would be adopted. It is $3,169,887.66, actually higher than the proposed budget.

The most significant increase from last year’s is in tuition to send sixth-through-12-grade students to Milford Middle and Milford High School. The tuition rate is $11,517 per student for 105 students, more than this year, totaling $1,209,285, up $79,839 or 7 percent.

The executive administration services line is down almost 16 percent. There were additional noteworthy decreases in guidance compensation, substitute teacher compensation and in the school board services totals.

Disregarding the Milford payment, the budget to run the Mason administrative unit and Mason Elementary School is $1,956,952.12. This is $31,283.74 or 1.57 percent lower than the current school year’s budget.

Additional warrant article to be discussed at the deliberative session seek to add funds to existing reserves from a unreserved fund balance and requiring no additional taxation.

Twenty-thousand dollars would be reallocated for educating educationally disabled children, and $5,000 for school building and grounds maintenance.

The deliberative session is at the school at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
