For the first time in years, the New Ipswich town pool will open on Sundays.

The decision was made at a Tuesday, June 6, board of selectmen’s meeting, at which the selectmen met with the new pool director.

Briana Boulerice, previously the pool coordinator in charge of lessons and lifeguard schedules, has assumed the position of pool director after the resignation of Mindy Buxton.

Buxton was both pool and recreation director until resigning from both posts in the past few weeks.

The selectmen budgeted for the pool to open Sundays this year, but there were concerns about having enough lifeguards. They asked Boulerice about it at the Tuesday meeting.

“We think people have two days off on, and we’re taking one of those away,” Selectboard chair David Lage said.

Boulerice said that Saturday is already one of the least popular days at the pool, so she does not think Sundays will be popular, but hopes it is.

“Personally, I don’t think it’d make that much of a difference, and I didn’t even know it was budgeted,” she said.

Because of lifeguard shortages, she will continue guarding and teaching lessons. She has about nine lifeguards ready for the year. She will be paid an hourly wage for guarding about 25 hours per week, at $9 per hour, and a $3,000 stipend as pool director.

“Obviously, I’ll have to learn a little bit as I go,” she said. “The pool director part of it, with the administrative side, I may be asking for help.”

She thinks the pool can get by for the summer with its lifeguards, but would like to add more. A posting asking for applicants is still on the town website.

The pool opens for business on June 17, and early registration is ongoing. Sunday hours will be the same as Saturday hours, noon to 4 p.m.
