The New Ipswich Board of Selectmen held its first meeting after voting day, with returning Selectman Jay Hopkins taking the place of Becky Doyle.

The first order of business for the new board was to assign roles for the coming year, beginning with replacing Doyle as chairman.

David Lage was named chair. He will also serve as the board’s representative to the planning board and highway department. Additionally, he is a member of the zoning board of adjustment.

Hopkins is going to be the representative for the town office, police department and budget committee. Tim Johnson will stay on as liaison to the parks and recreation department, fire department and emergency management department.

Recreation Director Mindy Buxton addressed the board to report on recent developments in her department. She highlighted the success of new programs, such as cheerleading, which had 52 participants, and town dances.

The father-daughter and mother-son dances made $980 from food, photos and cost of admission.

“We’re going to need to use the gym next year for the father-daughter dance because there was too many people to fit in the cafeteria at Highbridge,” she said.

This spring, the town is hosting recreational softball, previously run by independent company Bordertown. That group is donating a batting cage for New Ipswich’s use, and $2,385 for it to pick up the program. She said they also received a donation of $2,500.

Some of the money could go to use on a new scoreboard between the baseball and softball fields. Buxton is considering a proposal from Athletic Facility Solutions.
