Monadnock Community Hospital has reduced its workforce by 21 employees, a result of the financial impact associated with the coronavirus pandemic, the hospital announced in a news release Wednesday night.

In May, the hospital announced it furloughed 100 employees – about 20 percent of the hospital’s staff – citing declining revenues due to the coronavirus pandemic. When announcing the furlough’s, MCH officials said senior leadership would take a 10 percent pay cut, and physicians and director/manager level leaders would take a 5 percent pay cut.

According to Wednesday’s announcement, MCH has reinstated 75 percent of previously furloughed employees to support increasing patient volumes, which have returned to approximately 75 percent of pre-COVID levels. According to hospital spokesman Phil McFarland, a portion of the employees originally furloughed were not brought back.

“This was an extremely difficult decision. Eliminating positions is always our last option,” said Cyndee McGuire, President and CEO of MCH. “Our employees have been heroes these past five months. By carefully containing costs and reducing pay for administrators and managers, we have kept the number of impacted staff members to the fewest possible. We remain focused on the long-term sustainability of our hospital, while simultaneously preparing for our future in the event of expected COVID-19 surges.”

In June, the hospital announced it was resuming some non-emergency medical services for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic caused the Peterborough hospital to limit its offerings.

MCH previously announced that it lost $1.7 million during the month of March, and the projected monthly loss over the next year is expected to fall between $3 million and $4 million per month or a total of $24 million by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2020.

In late June, it was announced Monadnock Community Hospital would receive $1.28 million in federal CARES Act money to bolster its bottom line after losing revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic, one of eight New Hampshire hospitals to receive funding totaling $24.9 million.
