Ann Bunce was a smoker until well into her 40s before ditching the habit and taking up an athletic lifestyle. The Nelson resident would start a running group of her own, compete in marathons both local and national, and work her way up to a triathlon gold medal in the National Senior Games at 71 years old.

Bunce died in early November, and local runners, like Ginger Smith of the Monadnock Milers, miss her.

“She was just a really, really neat lady and very supportive of everybody running,” Smith said. “She was just a kick.”

Smith and the Milers have organized a memorial three-mile run – the Run for Ann—  on Saturday at 9 a.m., starting and ending at the Hancock Meetinghouse.

“We just want to call attention to the fact that she was a cool lady, the whole running community knew her, and just do something to get as many donations as we can for Alzheimer’s,” Smith said. “ Anything we can do in her memory.”

Smith said that an official annual memorial race is being planned for May, to circumnavigate one of Bunce’s favorite locations, Nelson’s Granite Lake.
