Open letter to our legislators

As you shape our country’s budget in the coming days, we want our tax dollars used to strengthen our communities, not to bankroll xenophobic policies that militarize our borders, lock up asylum seekers and tear families apart. These measures do not make us more secure.

Residents of New Hampshire towns and cities have a long tradition of welcoming immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers into our communities.

We continue to see the arrival of new immigrants as a plus for our communities, whether they are from Central America, the Congo, Bhutan or Russia. Given the difficulty employers have in filling jobs, migrants and immigrants would be assets to local businesses. They revitalize the local economy, help keep businesses going and start their own, and bring us the gifts of their resilience and hope for a better future. Their loyalty to this new country is extraordinary. We urge you to support efforts to reform our immigration system to welcome more immigrants in an orderly and just process.

Demand Congress #DefundHate and divest from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). We urge you to support reinstating Alternatives to Detention programs which monitor and support those applying for entry and are much more cost effective and humane than detention.

Thank you for your attention to these important issues.
