ConVal girls’ soccer eliminated with overtime loss

The preliminary playoff game Wednesday between Milford and ConVal went back and forth before an overtime goal gave Milford the 3-2 victory.

Milford scored a goal in the third minute with a shot from the corner of the penalty box. ConVal equalized in the 20th minute with a header goal by Allie Burgess off a corner kick by Haley Mathewson. ConVal scored with a shot from the edge of the penalty box off a corner kick that was only partially cleared, but the referee called halftime a second before the shot was taken and disallowed the goal.

ConVal took the lead in the 58th minute with a tap-in by Clara Wilsher when the ball was loose in the goalie box off a shot by Brooke Johnson. The Milford starting goalie was injured in a collision when challenging for a 50/50 ball at the edge of the penalty area and was unable to continue.

Milford tied the game with roughly 10 minutes to go in regulation time, sending the game into golden-goal overtime.The game was still tied after the first 10-minute interval, and Milford scored the winning goal with a free kick from almost 30 yards out in the second half of overtime to end the game and ConVal’s season.
