Letter: Share ideas for Town Meeting

Some years ago, we established a Moderator’s Advisory Committee in Jaffrey. Its purpose was to discuss and implement ideas that would enhance voter awareness and attendance at our annual Town Meeting and to remind voters of when and where voting was taking place.

Several good ideas emerged from those discussions and have been put into place. One is the banner that Steve Rigopoulos of Steve’s Lettering made for us and changes each year for us (at no cost). People have seen that banner, I’m sure, on our friend Nancy Stone’s building, Roy’s Custom Framing, at the intersection of Routes 202, 137 and 124.

Another very successful idea that the town has implemented is the distribution of postcards that list the important events, times and places in this very busy season. Each voter receives one of them by mail. Town Meeting is the purest form of government. We need only to watch TV or listen to the news to realize how fortunate we are to live where we do and enjoy the freedoms that we have. Those who are regular attendees of our annual Town Meeting know that over the years our attendance has declined.
