Letter: Women have the power

Women in this country have struggled to get the right to vote, since the American Revolution. Women like Abigail Adams, Susan B. Anthony and others too numerous to mention here have fought fearlessly on behalf of all women to have the right to vote.

Finally, in August of 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment of our Constitution, making the women's right to vote the law of the land. This election year, which comes 104 years later, is a chance for all women to change the direction of the way in which our country is heading.

After the repeal of Roe v Wade by our ultra-conservative Supreme Court, in election after election throughout our country, women have shown exactly how they feel about not only the issue of abortion, but the rights that the far right are attempting to force upon us all.

There is no doubt about the outcome of the next election if women decide to vote to protect their reproductive freedom, to call for common-sense gun legislation,  putting an end to book-banning and attempts to educate our young people with false narratives about our own history, plus many other issues that affect us all negatively and are taking us in the wrong direction.

As Howard Beale (Peter Finch) said in the 1976 movie “Network,” “ I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!” If enough men and most especially women, can take that attitude to the polls, then democracy will be chosen over tyranny in the 2024 November election.
