Coming up on Saturday, May 4, the Friends of the Greenfield Meetinghouse and Stephenson Library are co-sponsoring the inaugural Greenfield Spelling Bee at the Greenfield Meetinghouse. Children from ages 7 to 14 can register at the library – just stop in and sign up!

Doors will open at 9:30 a.m., and “bees will buzz” from 10 a.m. to noon. Registration is $10 per child, $5 for each additional child in a family. Spellers will be grouped in four age groups: 7- and 8-year-olds, 9- and 10-year-olds, 11- and 12-year-olds and 13- and 14-year-olds. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. For information, please email greenfieldnhspellingbee@gmail.com.

The spelling bee was the brainchild of Greenfield resident Billie-Jean Greene, who is organizing the event.

“My thoughts for the spelling bee was to bring some old-timey fun for kids and adults,” Greene said. “It’s more important than ever to revisit those ideas that once made our communities great. The spelling bee is one way to bring the community together for a few hours and have some good healthy competition for our kids. I here so many fond stories from people and about their spelling bee competitions when they were younger, and it always seems to bring a smile to their faces.”

Businesses interested in the sponsoring the bee can do so through the Friends of the Greenfield Meetinghouse website at greenfieldmeetinghouse.org. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Meetinghouse Building Fund. The Friends of the Greenfield Meetinghouse will also be holding a bake sale at the event and providing information about the Meetinghouse renovation project.

Seven Hills at Crotched Mountain, Greenfield’s largest employer, is holding an on-site job fair April 2 at the campus at 1 Verney Drive. If you have never driven up to the Crotched Mountain campus, it is worth a trip just to see the view. Seven Hills is investing millions of dollars into the old Crotched Mountain School campus and is currently ramping up to have full capacity of students in the next year. According to the Seven Hills website, the school serves children and adults with “disabilities and life challenges in a spectrum of therapeutic educational and clinical modalities.” Signing bonuses are available in certain positions. See sevenhills.org/crotched-mountain-school-job-opportunities.

Rosewood Equine in Greenfield is holding another equestrian Friday Night Fun Night for children and youth on Friday, April 19, with games, activities and riding with professional instructors. They are also hosting a Ladies Night on April 13, and registration for equine summer camp is now open. In Stephenson Library news, our wonderful children’s librarian, Ella Cadematori, has been named director of the Stephenson Library following the recent death of David Bridgewater. Ella has a full slate of events and programs coming up in spring, including an presentation by Kim Varney Chandler about “Covered Bridges of New Hampshire” on April 4. Chandler’s book features Greenfield’s own covered bridge over the Contoocook. (Yes, this bridge officially belongs to Greenfield, not Hancock!). On Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m., the library will host a children’s Easter egg hunt and story time, and the Friends of the Library will draw raffle tickets from their spring raffle. Be sure to stop by the library and get tickets for the Friends’ beautiful assortment of gift baskets!
