After a successful winter run, the Peterborough Farmers’ Market is gearing up for another strong spring/summer season, the market’s president, Conrad Dumas, said at the opening day of the season last Wednesday.

The market, which is held weekly at the Peterborough Community Center, was intended to be outdoors, but the rain and muddy conditions forced it inside – for the last time until the end of the summer, according to the market’s Facebook page.

Despite the shortened hours brought on the inclement weather, the turnout was strong. Dumas had counted 123 patrons by 4:30 p.m., with another half-hour left to go.

“Inside, we average about 150 patrons a week.” Dumas said. “I think we’ll probably make it.”

While he was happy with the day’s turnout, Dumas was eager for the market to move outside, where attendance is often much stronger. One day last summer, he counted nearly 500 patrons. He was optimistic that they may break that record this year.

“For the last four years – every year, we’ve had more patrons than the year before, more vendors than the year before,” he said. “So we’re cycling up, and we’ve not peaked. We keep growing our patrons and vendors each year. So we’re very excited and optimistic that we’ll have a solid year.”
