Antrim and Peterborough police take part in chases leading to arrests

Police from Antrim and Peterborough were involved in car chases Monday that resulted in arrests.
According to a release from the police department in Hillsborough, at 4:48 p.m., Antrim police were dispatched to T-Bird Mini-Mart for a report of a male using narcotics in a vehicle. Police determined that the vehicle was allegedly stolen from Nashua and headed toward Hillsborough on Route 202.
Before the vehicle reached Hillsborough, officers set up spike strips at two locations. According to the release, shortly thereafter, officers from Hillsborough and Antrim attempted to stop the vehicle, but the operator allegedly fled at speeds exceeding 90 mph. The vehicle was spiked by Hillsborough officers near the Ford dealership and again past McDonald’s.
According to police, the vehicle then took the westbound Route 9 on-ramp at a high rate of speed, with three of the four tires deflated, crashing over the median on the side of the hill.
The operator then fled on foot into the woods towards Gibson Road. A plainclothes detective in a suit gave chase through the woods, capturing the suspect minutes later.
The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Michael Stephens of Manchester. He was charged with DUI, reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, disobeying an officer, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, possession of controlled drug and receiving stolen property. An adult female passenger was also taken into custody at the location of the crash.
Assisting agencies included the Henniker Police and the Newbury Police K9 unit, which was traveling through town and helped locate narcotics suspected to have been discarded by the suspect in the woods.
Peterborough police arrested a Hancock resident Monday morning after a chase that began on Parmalee Drive.

According to a release from the Peterborough Police Department, at approximately 7 a.m. Monday, officers attempted to stop a white 2000 Jeep Cherokee on Parmelee Drive. Police stated that officers knew the driver had an outstanding warrant for a criminal matter and did not hold a valid driver’s license.
The driver allegedly increased his speed and attempted to flee from the police to the end of Parmelee Drive and onto Old Street Road northbound. Near the north end of Old Street Road, his Jeep collided with an oncoming 2004 Toyota Corolla being driven by Ann Leighton, 59, of Hillsborough.
At that point, police stated that the Jeep went off the road and came to rest in a wooded area. As the driver, Codie Anderson, 27, of Hancock, exited the Jeep, he was apprehended by police. The Jeep caught on fire, but police extinguished it quickly.
Leighton was transported to Monadnock Community Hospital to be examined for an arm injury. Her vehicle sustained front-end damage and was towed from the scene. Anderson was not injured. His vehicle sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.
Anderson was charged with disobeying an officer, reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, driving after suspension, uninspected motor vehicle, flaps and guards required. He was ordered held on preventative detention before a scheduled arraignment Tuesday in the 8th Circuit Court in Jaffrey.
