Jaffrey couple indicted for welfare fraud

KEENE — A Jaffrey couple was indicted by a Cheshire County Grand Jury in October for alledgedly lying to the N.H. Department of Health and Human Services so that they could receive medical benefits and food stamps.

Aaron Deshaies, 38, and his wife, Karen Deshaies, 42, both of Jennifer Lane in Jaffrey are charged with welfare fraud, a class A felony, according to Superior Court documents.

Karen Deshaies allegedly told the state agency that her husband was not residing with her, when, in fact, he was a member of the Jaffrey household. As a result, Karen Deshaies received financial assistance that she was not entitled to, according to Superior Court indictments dated Oct. 29.

Aaron Deshaies, who is charged with acting as an accomplice, allegedly provided similar false statements to the state agency, despite knowing that he was a member of Karen Deshaies’ household, according to the indictments.

The couple reportedly obtained more than $1,000 in welfare benefits between Sept. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2011.

Assistant Cheshire County Attorney John M. Gasaway Jr., who is prosecuting the case, could not be reached for comment by press time Wednesday.

A trial in the case has been scheduled for July 2013.
