ConVal Dollars for Scholars  recipient getting associate’s

Samantha Morton is the hard-working and proud recipient of a 2012 ConVal Dollars for Scholars mentoring support and financial award.
“This money, along with the mentoring support from Ms. Horan, really made it possible for me to go on to college,” Morton said.

Now completing her first year as an honors student in early childhood education at Nashua Community College, Morton continues to work about 20 hours a week at Aesop’s Tables cafe in downtown Peterborough. After completing an associates degree in 2014, she anticipates going on for her bachelor’s degree at a four-year college. Her goal is to work with young children in a private day care or a public school setting.

While at ConVal High School, Morton took the Careers in Education courses at the Region #14 Applied Technology Center, where she earned six college credits that she has transferred into her community college program in Nashua.

“When I first moved to Peterborough, it was hard,” said Samantha, “But my third grade teacher at PES, Betsy Gordon, was really friendly and pushed me to work hard. She and Carter Judkins are still very important to me. Then when I finally got to ConVal, I had lots of help from people like Mr. Curran, Mr. Kosteki, Mr. Fontaine, Ms. O’Neil, and Mr. Kitz.

“And I really connected with Lois Horan, my early childhood teacher [and Dollars for Scholars Mentor].... She’s my model for a caring teacher; I want to do for my [future] students what Ms. Horan did for me.”
