Taxes on the line

MASON — Town administrators, employees and residents gathered in the Mann House on the evening of Jan. 3 to discuss the preliminary 2012 town operating budget put forth by members of the Budget Committee and Select Board. The proposed budget is $1,658,057, up five percent from the 2011 operating budget of $1,572,002.

Scout makes his mark on cemetery

ANTRIM — There’s something stirring about lines of flags dotting gravestones on Memorial Day. In Antrim, Boy Scout Troop 2 is responsible for putting those flags on all of the veteran’s graves in anticipation of the holiday.

Tee-time

FRANCESTOWN — Since the Crotched Mountain Golf Club installed its new, high-definition golf simulator last month it’s mostly been used by young people looking to hit golf balls during the winter, now that the outdoor course is closed. With one exception.

Emphasis on local brings respite to some; others buckle under economy

Despite the recent economic downturn, many Monadnock region business owners are getting a boost this holiday season, thanks in part to a growing push to buy local.

Tightly knit

GREENVILLE — The Chamberlain Free Library in Greenville is usually a quiet place, and its librarians, Brenda Cassidy and Diane Steele, would have it so. But after lunch on Tuesdays, a dozen or so women make their way up the front steps and, chatting all the while, take off their coats, settle in around a large table in the stacks, and begin to knit.

Working to build a conservation plan

FRANCESTOWN — The town is enrolling in a step-by-step process to develop a conservation plan for the future, with the help of Monadnock Community Conservation Partnership.

Fee for recycling weighed

GREENFIELD — A pay-per-bag fee to dump trash was suggested by a budget committee member for the Greenfield Recycling Center at a Select Board meeting on Thursday.

Stores see plaid

Black Friday — the busy shopping day after Thanksgiving that has drawn hordes of bargain seekers to shopping malls and big-box stores in recent years — became Plaid Friday for many in the Monadnock region last week, as shoppers flocked to “buy local” in Peterborough, Jaffrey and surrounding towns.

A thoughtful montage

I recently returned from vacation and happened to be walking by the Sharon Arts Center Downtown Galleries’ window. I was arrested by what I saw. Was it a person? No, two people. A pair of shoes. One glance was not enough; it was too much to take in and just enough to wake me.

Voters choose status quo

MASON — The town decided to keep the Select Board in charge of appointing the town’s road agent during a Special Town Meeting Saturday, in which voters deliberated on whether the system in place is working to correct the town’s much-maligned roads. Several personnel issues involving the position in the past year have prompted indignation from residents.
