A ConVal music teacher is being recognized for his integrity, selflessness and dedication to the district.

Brian Moore received the Air & Space Forces’ Sentry Educator Award, a nationwide award only given to 10 educators, counselors and coaches in New England. He received the award at the Academic and Athletic Achievements Ceremonies at ConVal on June 7.

Moore will also join an Air Force educator tour, which grants individuals a chance to witness the Air Force and Space Force in action.

According to Moore, this year’s competition featured thousands of nominations from 875 schools across the nation. In his fourth year teaching at ConVal, Moore said he was surprised by the immense support he received from his students and fellow teachers.

“I feel very blessed and very shocked,” said Moore. “I’m just so proud of my students for being thoughtful and caring. It says a lot more about them not about me,” said Moore.

For Moore, this award is personal. In honor of his father’s service in the Air Force, Moore spends his free time volunteering for Taps Across America, a national organization meant to honor those who have fallen by the playing of “Taps.” For years, Moore has played “Taps” at Memorial Day services, funerals and special events across the region, which he said is a contribution worth making.

“Music has been a way for me to honor my family who served and for those who currently serve,” said Moore.

In the classroom, Moore said he uses the term “family time” to describe his interactions with students and his culture of learning.

“We didn’t call it a ‘class,’ we call it ‘family time’ because of how we use music to enrich ourselves and other people,” said Moore.

Because of his teaching style, Moore said the classroom dynamic encourages students to be their authentic self and embrace learning in a fun way.

After receiving the award, Moore said he plans to encourage his students and continue to be a role model for the entire ConVal community.

“I am really overwhelmed and thankful to be recognized for something I consider to be normal,” he said. “I think it’s nice to be reminded that you can be a vessel for integrity.”
