Police arrested the driver of a car that crashed into the Souhegan River on Wednesday morning.

Shortly before 10 a.m., an eastbound Kia Forte on Route 101 left the road just before the Russell Hill Road intersection, crashed through the guardrail, went down the embankment and landed on its roof in the Souhegan River.

The man driving the Kia was out of the car when police and fire crews arrived.

Police arrested the driver, Jared Barr, 37, of Stratham, at the scene and charged him with driving while intoxicated. He was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough “as a precaution, as he ended up upside down in the river,” Wilton Police Chief Eric Olesen said at the scene.

Later Wednesday afternoon, Olesen confirmed that Barr had “very minor, if any” injuries, and had been released from the hospital after being checked.

Olesen said Barr’s “manner at the scene” and an odor alerted police to his alleged intoxicated state. Barr was traveling from a Vermont worksite when he crashed, Olesen said.

Following his arrest, he was released on his own personal recognizance, and issued a court date of Oct. 16 at the Milford District Court.

The fire crews responded to the scene, putting out an absorbent barrier to contain any fluid spills while the car was lifted out of the river by a tow truck.

Traffic was down to one lane for about an hour on Route 101 while crews brought the vehicle up from the river and cleared the scene.
