The Gravell family is split up, staying both with family and in hotels, after a fire on the night of Jan. 21 that killed two of the family’s pets and severely damaged their New Ipswich home.

The house, located on Greenville Road, is owned by Rick and Char Gravell. Also living there were their son, Ricky Gravell, and his wife, Sara Gravell, who is 15 weeks pregnant with the couple’s first child.

Since the fire, Sara and Ricky Gravell have been staying with Sara’s parents, and Rick and Char have been staying at a hotel with assistance from the American Red Cross and their insurance.

The family is currently in limbo, Sara Gravell said in an interview on Friday, as they wait to hear from the insurance company.

“We just don’t really know yet,” Sara said, about when or if the family can begin repairs or move back into the home.

While the fire was mostly contained to one corner of the home, smoke heat and water caused a lot of damage to the Gravells’ possessions.

“There’s a lot of soot and smoke damage, making everything unusable, really. We’ve been trying to see what we can save, if anything,” Sara said.

Two of the family’s cats died in the fire, but the rest of the family’s pets, including a dog and some other cats, were able to escape. The family was able to keep the pets with them, at Sara’s parents and at a pet-friendly hotel, she said.
