Greenfield firefighters responded to a garage fire Monday morning on Forest Road.
Fire Chief Richard McQuade said a resident on Francestown Road spotted the fire through the trees. The structure was a roughly 20- by 20-foot detached garage. The garage was 40 to 50 feet away from the house, which suffered some siding damage due to the heat from the fire.
“It’s currently under investigation but not considered suspicious at this time,” McQuade said. “The guys did a pretty quick knock down to prevent anything from spreading to the house.”
McQuade explained that water from Sunset Lake was used because other viable water sources were unavailable.
“As much rain as we’ve been getting, the water table hasn’t rebounded with the small tributaries, so we had to use the big lake to refill tankers,” he said.
Departments from Lyndeborough, Peterborough, Bennington, Antrim, Wilton and Milford responded to the blaze. The Hancock Fire Department covered Greenfield’s station while responders fought the fire, and the state fire marshal’s office was called to conduct an investigation.
Burner causes smoke in Peterborough
Peterborough firefighters responded to a reported structure fire Friday afternoon, but the problem was with an oil burner and the house was not damaged.
According to Fire Chief Ed Walker, the department got a call at around 5:30 p.m. from a resident who looked across the street and saw black smoke coming from behind the neighbor’s house. When firefighters arrived, they determined the smoke was from the oil burner. No one was injured, and firefighters ventilated the house because there was some carbon monoxide.
