If you spot an officer sporting whiskers this October, know it’s likely for a good cause.

During the month of October, law enforcement agencies across the state are joining the “Razorless for a Reason: Beards for Bucks” campaign to raise funds for their local Child Advocacy Centers. This year, police departments in Peterborough, Lyndeborough and Jaffrey are participating to help the agencies meet their $200,000 fundraising goal.

“The Monadnock Region Child Advocacy Center is an important piece of our law enforcement strategy,” said Jaffrey Police Chief Todd Muilenberg. “And while they receive funding, there’s always room for extras to support their program.”

New Hampshire has 11 Child Advocacy Centers providing forensic interviews, coordinating the multidisciplinary team and family support services. Child Advocacy Centers work in partnership with all the necessary agencies and specialists to coordinate a plan of action to provide specialized services for abused children and their families.

Participating officers donate a registration fee to wear facial hair – an often regulated part of police appearance protocols – during the month of October, and collect community donations. The money raised goes to their local Child Advocacy Center to continue their work.

About 1,900 children were served by Child Advocacy Centers in the state last year.

Thus far, Peterborough has raised $2,608 and Jaffrey $580.
