Mascenic Regional School District voters approved the district’s $18.99 million budget this year, and to add a third kindergarten teacher, despite a split vote on both issues.

Votes were close on both issues, with the district voting 567-501 to approve the budget, and 551-502 to raise $115,000 to add an additional half-day kindergarten class.

The $115,000 covers the cost of both a third kindergarten teacher and a third para-professional. The aim in adding a kindergarten class is to reduce class sizes to target children who need extra assistance at the earliest possible level.

Those were the closest votes of the day, with the remainder of the warrant passing by wider margins.

The district approved 603-465 a one-year collective bargaining agreement. The agreement increases teacher salaries by a total of $182,000 in 2020.

Voters agreed to several additions to capital reserve funds, including $50,000 for the school repair and maintenance reserve and $25,000 to for the healthcare capital reserve. Both amounts will come from the district’s unreserved fund balance at the end of the 2019 fiscal year.

The district also approved establishing a new capital reserve fund for food services and seeding the fund with $1,000 from the unreserved fund balance.

School Board incumbents Rachel Anderson of New Ipswich and Steve Spratt of Greenville ran uncontested and maintain their seats. Anderson received 627 votes in New Ipswich and Spratt received 150 votes in Greenville.
