The Monadnock Valley Patriots Special Olympics Team plan to host their third annual Poker Run on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The event will benefit the Monadnock Valley Patriots, a team of about 30 athletes from the Monadnock Region competing in different Special Olympic sporting events throughout the year, as the costs for yearly competition reach over 10,000 dollars.

Beginning at 8 a.m., motorcyclists participating in the event will begin the 70-mile ride at the Hometown Diner in Rindge and make their way to five different stops, ending at American Legion Post 11 in Jaffrey.

At each stop, participants will pick up a random playing card and will be greeted by members of the Monadnock Valley Patriots who will be collecting donations from locals interested in the event. After the fifth stop, the participant with the best poker hand will win a prize.

At the final stop, participants can enjoy a barbecue and will have the opportunity to enter a series of raffles to win prizes.

The number of participants has grown each year since the first Poker Run in 2017. Hoping to surpass the 800 dollars raised at last year’s event, organizer Judy Chandler thinks this will be the best one yet.

“We began spreading the word much earlier this year,” Chandler said. “It’s not that we want people to give more money, we just want more people to come.”

Throughout the year, the Monadnock Valley Patriots athletes will compete in winter and summer sports including nordic skiing, snowshoeing, basketball, track and field, and more.

The two largest events will cost about $4,000 dollars each, making fundraisers a necessity for the team. The Poker Run relies solely on volunteers and donations.

Preregistration costs 20 dollars with a 10 dollar fee for passengers while day-of registration costs 25 dollars.
