Mason’s town budget season is in full swing as town officials worked at the preliminary review Tuesday.

The operating budget for 2017 looks to be lower than 2016’s budget of $1,657,359. Some of the savings are because billings were low for 2016, and total expenditure was $1,566,374.55.

For example, the town did not need new tax maps designed and printed because there were no changes to property lines until the end of the year. This is possibly because of the uncertainty of the pipeline.

“No one was subdividing because they knew they couldn’t sell anything,” Selectman Charles Moser said.

Other reasons for the decreased budget are the cyclical or one-time expenditures planned for last year, including the town’s total reassessment, which cost $47,848.60 but will be much less this year.

At the start of the Monday meeting, Mason’s 2017 operating budget was projected to be $1,580,689.19, a 4.6 percent decrease from 2016’s, but increases were already being made at that hearing.

Unpaid bills from 2016 go on the 2017 budget and were accounted for. An adjustment had to be made for internet connectivity and information technology services, which is being spread to more departments and the rate increased from $39 to $58 per month.

The library’s climbed $1,236 to $55,722.08 because of rate changes for telephone and IT services. The office of town clerk and tax collector saw a jump of $886 between the technology support and phone and internet lines, making the new total $60,374.33. These were the most affected.

The next Board of Selectmen meeting is Jan. 24, and the next Budget Advisory Committee meeting is Feb. 16.
