Letter: Artists coming together over Sharon Arts Center closing

To the editor:

I make pottery as part of my self-care routine. For the past ten years, I’ve created pots out of lumps of clay as a way to create some control and connection in my life. I’ve always done this in a community studio because as someone who is very aware of the benefit of being part of a community, this is as important to me as the creating.

When I moved to the area, I was grateful to be welcomed into the Sharon Arts Center (NHIA/NEC). I’m grateful for the 15 months I spent there. Upon receiving the news of the pending closure, I was not surprised, but definitely disappointed.

A small group of potters (aka “the sad potters’ guild”) has been gathering to talk about how to stay together as a community. We are hoping there are other artists and community members who have their reasons for re-envisioning a community space for artists.

On Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m., we plan to host a community meeting at the Peterborough Town House. We hope many will come and help re-envision a community-based center for artists and artists-to-be.”
