Editorial: Ride the wave to lower taxes

The wave has finally crested, and Peterborough taxpayers have had enough. With tax bills rising, steps are being taken to relieve that burden, hopefully without compromising our quality of life.

If you’ve been reading our front page stories, you know that the ConVal school district is engaged in an ongoing lawsuit with the state in search of a more balanced funding distribution. The suit hit a snag last week, when the judge ruled immediate relief was not available until after the fiscal year ends in June.

No matter what happens in the ConVal lawsuit, it’s heartening to think that the district is taking steps to keep our children’s education at a high level while potentially reducing the money raised from town taxes.

Today’s front page also includes an article detailing the Peterborough Select Board’s backpedal on the plans for a new Department of Public Works garage, which comes with a $4 million dollar price tag, for which the town would take out a bond. Selectmen said they want the bond approved so that they can build the new DPW building on Water Street next to the wastewater treatment plant. Approval of this bond would clear the way for a future million dollar bond to build a new fire station where the current DPW building is located, which is behind the Peterborough Community Center on Union Street. As one domino falls, the next follows, and two pressing needs are served.

Selectmen told the Ledger-Transcript Monday that they’re now considering other options based on feedback at a March budget hearing. But it’s hard to imagine they haven’t heard complaints from townspeople saying they’re fed up with rising taxes and simply don’t want to take on another expensive bond, especially if there are other options. And, many have opined that the fire department’s needs should be our higher priority, yet they aren’t directly addressed by anything on the May warrant.
