A candidate’s positions

To the editor:

On Monday, June 11, I filed as a candidate for the New Hampshire House. I am running for this position in the hope that I can help to make New Hampshire a healthier, safer, and more prosperous place to live, work, and raise a family.

My name is Chris Balch. I am a retired teacher of science. Currently I am an author, a builder of small boats, and an active fundraiser for muscular dystrophy. I believe an educated society is a tolerant, creative, and more globally responsible society. I believe New Hampshire’s utilities must stop investing in fossil-fuel infrastructure and commit to sustainable energy. “Natural gas” is not a bridge fuel. I am opposed to fracking, and I am opposed to pipelines.

As a responsible firearms owner, I believe my Second Amendment rights are best protected by keeping arms out of the hands of those not entitled to possess them. We need to require all sales to be made through Federal Firearms License dealers and eliminate the 22 to 40 percent private transfer loophole. In addition, I believe first-time buyers of firearms should complete a mandatory training course in safety/handling.

I believe healthcare is a right all are entitled to. I support Wilton’s status as a sanctuary town, and strongly believe any person willing to work for a productive life is welcome in America. I will work for the separation of money and politics. There is no question in my mind that the will of the people is ignored when organizations and corporations fund politicians.
