Summer is just about upon us, and here comes the sun! After a spring soaked in rain, my garden and new lawn are practically singing for sunshine. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful; the rain has been a gift, coaxing vibrant life from the soil. But as with most things, it’s a double-edged sword. When we have one, we long for the other.
The other day, I tuned to a program on NPR discussing the story of soap operas on TV. It made me laugh, as long-shelved memories began to reemerge and I realized this topic ties to why we settled in Wilton. Let me explain.
Greetings from the Barn! Since my last column, the entire staff has arrived, which includes our Core Company (formerly called the Interns or Second Company). Education is built into the mission of the Players, which includes hiring paid apprentices to work throughout the summer on all five productions.

On Tuesday night, Conant Middle High School underclassmen received their accolades, including two recognized “Outstanding Orioles,” who will be honored with their names in a plaque hung within the school.
Students at Highbridge Hill Elementary School dressed up as historical figures, athletes, and scientists from New Hampshire and gave presentations about their figure during a “living museum” on Thursday.

The Peterborough Planning Board approved applications for two housing projects, one on Old Greenfield Road and one at the former site of Little River Bed and Breakfast, to move ahead at Monday night’s meeting of the board.

After nearly being discontinued this year, the Rindge Farmers’ Market opened this Saturday, on a new day, and with new organizers at the helm.
The 13th annual Bennington Rhubarb Festival, a fundraiser for GEP Dodge Library Building Fund, took place Saturday despite the weather. Residents braved rain, mud and cool temperatures to sample homemade rhubarb pie, meet local livestock, buy items at the Rhubarb General Store, and hit the library book sale.
Children under 15 took to the banks of the Souhegan River on Saturday to try their luck at the Kids’ Fishing Derby, hosted by the Greenville Fire Department. Children won prizes in multiple categories and walked away with trophies and prizes of fishing equipment and tackleboxes.

On Friday evening, Rindge Fire Department responded to a report of a smoke odor in a building, following a lighting strike.

No one was seriously injured after a single car accident on Tuesday, June 3, at 5:35 p,m, near the intersection of Route 202 and Milk Road in Antrim. First responders from Antrim Fire and Rescue found that one vehicle had left the highway and traveled about 50 feet before hitting a tree.
The Greenfield Elementary school community gathered Friday afternoon in the school multi-purpose room to celebrate four longtime educators who are retiring from the ConVal district this year.

I headed down to Norway Pond in Hancock to watch a group of people race around a course, two to a canoe – one in the bow, blindfolded, with a paddle, and one in the stern, giving directions.
Antrim Historical Society will host a talk by Molly Grant of the Cordwainer Shop at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at the Presbyterian Church Hall, 73 Main St., Antrim. The event is free and open to the public.
The Rindge Conservation Commission will kick off its annual Hike and Paddle Series with a free, family hike at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at the Contoocook Marsh Conservation Complex.
