The feisty Fireballs tennis team qualified for the USTA 18+ Women’s 4.0 League sectionals after winning the regional championship last weekend.

“We have a lot of love and a lot of grit,” said Sorrell Downing, one of the Fireballs’ singles’ players. “We’re feisty, we’re going to battle to the bitter end, not give up.”

The team, based out of Monadnock Indoor Tennis Club in Peterborough, is comprised of 17 women ranging from about 40 to 60 years old.

“We have so much fun playing,” said captain Elizabeth Frost. “We all get along and we have a good camaraderie going on.”

The league runs from September to April, followed by district, sectional and national tournaments.

Last weekend, the Fireballs won two out of three matches to take first place in the district finals. The matches involved two singles and three doubles lines; the Fireballs are strong in all facets.

“I think it was lineups, and putting strong partners together,” Frost said. “And, we had two really strong singles players as well.”

The sectionals, held from Aug. 16 to 18 in western Massachusetts, involve some changes for the Fireballs. They’ll face a bigger pool of opponents, move from an indoor to an outdoor court (hence Wednesday’s practice at Adams Playground) and look to replace Frost, who’s out with an ankle injury after last weekend’s play.

“Sadly, I am replaceable,” Frost joked.

Winning at the sectionals would earn the Fireballs a trip to October’s national championship tournament, and they’ve got high hopes.

“We have just as good a chance as anyone else,” Downing said. “We’ll go in with that attitude.”
