Riding high after New York trip

Nine young horsewomen from Mason’s Contry Hill Farm stables recently got the opportunity to meet Olympic riders during a three-day trip to New York for a dressage competition.

The riders from Contry Hill traveled to Saugerties, N.Y., to the Lendon’s Gray’s Youth Dressage Festival. The festival is open only to riders under the age of 21, and consists of three phases, including a written test, a dressage test and an equitation class. Riders can also form teams to compete for the highest combined score.

While competing, the riders were also given the opportunity to meet 1992 Olympic bronze medalist Caron Lavell, who sponsored and supports the show, as well as Lendon Gray, who participated in the 1980 and 1988 Olympic teams, World Championships and World Cup.

The riders from Contry Hill who were awarded prizes in the show included:

Annika Ormsby, 11, of Groton, Mass.: Overall champion in the walk trot under 11 division.

Lucy Hill, 11, of Groton, Mass.: Overall reserve champion in the walk trot canter, ages 14-21.

Annie Wolgemuth, 20, of Temple: Overall champion in the training level division ages 18-21. Winner of the Shavano’s Pride Trophy for being the highest scoring paint horse.

Laura Santer, 21, of Hollis: Overall champion in the first level division ages 18-21. Winner of the Finally Phanton Trophy for being the highest scoring thoroughbred. Overall reserve show champion.

Rachael Brown, 15, of Hollis: 3rd place team finish.

Hannah Riseman of Hollis: 1st place in written test. Fourth overall in walk trot canter ages 14-21.

Victoria Hall of Lunenburg, Mass.: 7th overall in the walk trot canter division for ages 14-21.

Abby Delorey, 15, of Lunenburg, Massachusetts: Overall champion in the training level division ages 14-16.

In addition to their riding accomplishments, the riders of Contry Hill Farm also won best-decorated tack stall.
