STAFF REPORT

A Keene man was charged with driving under the influence for his role in an accident that seriously injured a woman and a 3-year-old child, according to a state police release.

Joseph Mays, 29, of Keene was arrested after being taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon by helicopter for life-threatening injuries, police said.

State police say he was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla east on Route 202 around 6:35 p.m. Friday when he crossed the center line and collided with a 2012 Honda Fit driven by Merissa Aldrich of Peterborough, who was heading west. Aldrich was also taken by helicopter to DHMC with life-threatening injuries. A 3-year-old girl in a safety seat in the backseat of the Honda Fit was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital, then transferred to DMHC with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The details about the injuries are unknown.

Route 202 was closed for four hours as police investigated the scene.

State police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Trooper Michael Pelletier at michael.pelletier@dos.nh.gov.
