Ejected driver charged with reckless operation

A Rindge man who was hospitalized following a crash in which he was ejected from his car in November is being charged with reckless operation, according to Jaffrey police.

Colin Ireland, 20, of Rindge was traveling east on Squantum Road near the Jaffrey-Rindge town line when he lost control of his 2001 Honda Civic on the morning of Nov. 27, police said. Ireland was ejected from his vehicle as it crossed the roadway, where it then hit several objects, including a utility pole and an embankment, before coming to a rest. The accident took down an 8-foot section of the pole, causing nearby homes to lose power for several hours.

Ireland was treated on the scene before being transported to Monadnock Community Hospital with serious injuries. Ireland eventually went to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., where he was treated in the weeks following the crash. Police could not confirm when Ireland was released, nor the manner of his injuries.

On Dec. 31, police went to Ireland’s Rindge residence to serve him a must-appear summons for reckless operation. Ireland was issued a Feb. 6 court date at 8th District Court, Jaffrey.

In the days following the crash, police said speed was a factor; they also acknowledged poor road conditions associated with rainy weather the day of the accident.
