We need to pass union contract

To the editor:

I looked at Thursday’s bold headline, “Union raises to cost $500K” and I thought, “So much for a teacher’s contract.”

I teach at Mascenic, but I am a long time staff member, so I am not up for any big raise, but I am also a member of this community. I pay my taxes here. I know it looks like a lot, but if you read the whole article, the headline should have read, “Mascenic wants to keep young, talented teachers.”

We are losing them and the loss is especially critical in math and science. Those kids put in a few years here, build their resume, and go next door to higher paying towns. We lost a promising math teacher last year to about a $14,000 increase in Milford. How could he pass it up? One of our young science teachers is now at Hollis Brookline; she was excellent. We need to keep talent for the students I have come to love; they deserve it.

The question is, “Will we, the voters, put the kids first?”

I sincerely hope so.
