Rindge: Police seeking man who assaulted woman on Rails-to-Trails
Police are seeking a man who reportedly assaulted a jogger on the Rails-to-Trails path in Rindge on Wednesday afternoon.
A lone woman was jogging on Rails-to-Trails in the area of County Road and Route 202 at about 1 p.m., when police say she was assaulted by an unknown man.
The victim described the man as being white, skinny, in his 30s, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored hoodie that partially covered his face, according to a press release issued by Rindge police Friday morning. The victim did not notice any facial hair, but believes his hair was brown.
The man ran off down the south end of the trail when the victim screamed. Rindge Detective Jeffrey Seppala declined to comment on whether the woman was injured in the attack. He also declined to comment on the nature of the attack, due to the ongoing status of the investigation.
According to Seppala, police have not received any reports of similar attacks. They believe this was an isolated incident.
“We are working on an active investigation, and still working on other avenues of finding a suspect,” said Seppala. “We’re hoping that the public who might have been in the area and seen anything can provide us with some information.”
As of Monday afternoon, Seppala said they have not received any community input, but are pursuing other leads.
Seppala said police are not advising the public to avoid the trails, but are urging extra safety precautions, including carrying safety items such as pepper spray.
“Use caution and don’t go alone,” he said. “It’s hard to tell if this was an opportunist or someone that knew what they were doing ahead of time. Use common sense. Knowing something did happen, try to be extra vigilant and try not to be alone.”
Police are asking anyone who may have any information, or may have seen any suspicious vehicles or people in the area, to contact the Rindge Police Department at 899-5009. Anonymous tips can be left at firstname.lastname@example.org.
