Plenty of games to look forward to this winter

In today’s sports section, you will find all the high school schedules for the upcoming winter season.

From basketball to hockey, wrestling, swimming and indoor track, as well as Nordic and alpine skiing, there is something for everyone in the cold months ahead.

And while it is great to have the listings for all the local teams, sometimes it is hard to figure out what event to go to. So here is a quick look at some of the better story lines that will develop and match-ups that will take place over the next few months.

On Dec. 4, the Conant girls basketball team will open up its season at home with perennial power Campbell. The Orioles dropped the 2010-11 title game to Campbell and were handed a pair of double digit losses last year, but it should be different this time around, especially considering it will also signify the varsity debut of freshman Madison Springfield and the likely return to dominance for Conant.

At the Winchendon School’s Jason Ritchie Ice Arena on Dec. 8, the ConVal girls hockey program will play its first-ever varsity game against Bishop Guertin, just one year after the program’s inception.

With a “home” match-up against Manchester West on Dec. 11, the ConVal girls basketball team will play its first of eight games at Great Brook School in Antrim due to the school gymnasium renovations that will not be completed until after the season.

The Conant boys basketball team will be looking to avenge last year’s semifinal loss with every game on its schedule this season. On Dec. 21, the Orioles will travel to Hopkinton, a fellow Final Four team, and then have a pair of difficult back to backs with Campbell and Bow in mid-January and to close out the regular season.

The season officially kicks off on Nov. 30 when both the Wilton-Lyndeborough and Mascenic girls basketball teams travel for their openers, but it truly begins on Dec. 11 in the Mascenic gymnasium when the Viking boys play host to Conant in the first of two annual meetings.

New to the schedule is a pair of games between the Mascenic and WLC boys and girls basketball teams, giving the region yet another set of contests with local interest on each side.

The ConVal Nordic ski team will host its only meet on Jan. 12, providing there is snow by that point. Last year, the Cougars were unable to ski against any competition at home because of the mild winter. Due to the ConVal gym renovations, the wrestling team has also been displaced for the season and will be competing on the road in all but one meet. On Jan. 30, the Cougars will host Goffstown in a dual meet that will act as the team’s home opener, senior day and home finale all in one.

At the very end of the season, the WLC boys basketball team will play a home and away series with rival Sunapee, while the WLC girls square off with the Lakers in its home opener on Dec. 4,which should provide some insight into how strong this year’s squad is.

And don’t forget about the annual doubleheader between Conant and ConVal on Jan. 22, at Conant, and the Hoops for Hope breast cancer awareness fundraiser.
