ConVal junior Adam Smullen looked at Saturday’s Division II Championships as just another tournament.

Even though he was ranked No. 1 in the 160-pound weight class, Smullen didn’t feel any added pressure. And when he matched up with Alvirne’s Pat Morse, seeded second at 160, in the finals with a state championship hanging in the balance, Smullen knew exactly what he needed to do.

He had not faced Morse this season, so Smullen used a conservative approach to the match.

“I didn’t want to do anything too risky,” Smullen said. “I just relied on what my coaches were telling me and my experience.”

So with 20 seconds gone by in the second period, Smullen collected his third pin of the day to earn the first individual state championship of his career and only one for ConVal in 2012-13.

“All that went through my head was I just became a state champion,” said Smullen.

Smullen was a perfect 3-0, getting his first two wins in 51 and 20 seconds, to make up for a disappointing third place last year.

“It actually feels pretty sweet, especially after having that upset loss last year,” said Smullen.

In his semifinal match with Andrew Butler of Hollis/Brookline, Smullen was actually the one taken down, but a quick reversal got him in position for an early pin.

But Smullen was not the only Cougar to have a good day on the mat.

Seniors Jesse Mitchell and DJ Colburn both made it to the finals of their weight classes, but had to settle for runner-up, as the Cougars finished sixth as a team with 116 points, seven behind Merrimack for fifth.

Mitchell, ranked second at 138 pounds, met reigning champion Peter Shea of Goffstown in the championships match and a first round attempt for a take down turned out to be his downfall.

“He went to shoot a take down and got into a bad position,” said coach Brian Whittemore.

Mitchell lost his only other meeting with Shea 7-2 on Jan. 30. He posted a 5-0 win in the semifinals to reach his first carer title match.

But his best win of the day came in the quarterfinals when he defeated Ryan Boyle of Winnacunnet for the 100th victory of his career.

“It’s a little easier to get there now, but you have to be pretty good to get there,” said Whittemore.

Mitchell became the fourth wrestler in ConVal history to reach triple digit wins, joining his brother Justin, Chad Brouillet and Dan Smullen — Adam’s older brother. Justin Mitchell owns the school record with 108 wins.

“Ever since my brother got his 100th win, I’ve always wanted to get mine,” said Mitchell. “It was one of my goals in high school.”

Entering the day, Mitchell did not know he was one victory away from the milestone. Whittemore had asked him earlier in the season if he wanted to know when he was close and Mitchell said no.

“If I knew it would have put a lot more stress on me,” said Mitchell.

Colburn’s bid to win his second straight title at 113 pounds came up short against Jacob Nault of Goffstown in the finals.

Colburn, ranked No. 2, was pinned in just his second match of the day after receiving a bye through the quarterfinals and then pinned Merrimack’s Ben Cronin in the semifinals. Colburn, who returned to the team in early February, only wrestled four matches all season entering the 113-pound finals.

“He just hasn’t wrestled enough this year against good competition,” said Whittemore.

In all, ConVal will be represented by seven wrestlers at this Saturday’s Meet of Champions. The top five in each weight class from Division II qualifies, along with six from Division I and three from D-III.

Freshman Josh Curran lived up to his seeding at 145 pounds, finishing fourth overall with a 2-2 record. Junior Mike Allen also finished fourth at 132 pounds, as did Zach Davis at 220 pounds.

Jake Rupp was the last ConVal wrestler to qualify after placing fifth at 152 pounds. Jordan Loll was one spot away at 195 pounds, finishing sixth.

“Everyone wrestled to their seed or a little bit better, so I can’t complain about that,” said Whittemore.
