ConVal juniors Sydney Michalak and Rowan Wilson will strap on their skis for one more race this season on Monday when they travel to Meet of Champions at Gunstock Mountain Resort.

Michalak will ski in both the freestyle and classic races after placing third overall in each at the Division II Championships held on Feb. 13. Wilson will compete in just the freestyle race.

The top 10 in each race at the divisional level meets qualify for Meet of Champions and for Wilson it came down to a difference of one second. The ConVal transfer, who moved into the district from Maine this year, narrowly edged out Annie Peternel of Kingswood for the 10th and final qualifying position. She was also 16th in the classic race at the D-II meet.

For Michalak, she was finally able to break through. She had led ConVal in each of the last two years at the Division II Championships only to fall just short of qualifying for Meet of Champions. She was 12th in each of her previous two attempts at advancing in the freestyle and finished one spot out as a freshman in the classic discipline.

But Michalak improved by more than four minutes in the freestyle over last year’s Division II performance and was within 13 seconds of second place in each race in D-II this time around.

During the season, Michalak and Wilson were mainstays at the top of the ConVal scoring sheet. Michalak had four wins and three other top three finishes over the course of the six week schedule. She was also eighth at the first NH Coaches Series Race, which is almost equivalent to the state meet. Michalak will also compete as part of the NH team at the Eastern High School Championships, March 15-17 in Maine.

Wilson was consistently the No. 2 finisher for the Cougars, but her performance at the Division II meet was by far her best of the year.

Meet of Champions was originally scheduled for Saturday in Plainfield, but was changed on Monday.
