The Monadnock region is home to dozens of great artists who show in galleries around the region. And the Jaffrey Civic Center sets aside a month each year to give the region’s young up-and-coming artists a chance to shine with an upcoming show titled “Young People’s Exhibit.”

Through May 25 the Civic Center will be exhibiting artwork by Conant High School and Saint Patrick School students. During a recent Conant High School art class, students were still putting the finishing touches on some of the pieces that will appear in the show.

Nathan Rousseau, 16, of Jaffrey and Ashley Stevens, 18, of Rindge were both completing paintings, for which they used reference photos to break animals down into geometric shapes.

Stevens had chosen a charging Native American warhorse. She has had a particular interest in Native American imagery for some time now, she said, and wanted to showcase that.

Rousseau, whose geometric painting features a large male lion head, said this will be one of the first times he’s shown his artwork.

“It’s definitely exciting,” he said.
