Cougars maintain hold on D-II’s top spot

ConVal defeats Souhegan 3-1 in extra innings to run win streak to five and earn season sweep of Sabers

The ConVal softball team continued its march through the regular season on Friday with a 3-1 win in eight innings over Souhegan.

It was the Cougars’ first extra inning game of the season, but seventh decided by two runs or less — six of which resulted in victories. They also earned the season sweep of the Sabers.

And once again it was senior Ana Hautanen providing the late-inning heroics. Following a two-out single from junior Bryanna Lindsay and a walk to senior Katie Walker, Hautanen singled home both runners in the top of the eighth to give ConVal a two-run lead. It was Hautanen’s third hit of the season in the seventh inning or later to win a game. She had a walk-off single against Conant on May 6 and helped cap off a three-run seventh inning rally at John Stark in a come-from-behind 4-3 win on April 26.

Junior Courtney Fisher was once again dominant in the win. She struck out a career-high 17 Sabers and did not walk a batter, as she faced just two over the minimum. Both hits against Fisher came in the fifth, one being a solo home run by her counterpart, Souhegan pitcher Heather Cochran.

ConVal scored the first run of the game on a Fisher RBI single to score senior Marena Brock. Fisher had three hits in the game, while Walker went 2-for-3.

ConVal entered this week with a 12-1 record and in control of the top spot in Division II. The Cougars were the only team in D-II with less than two losses going into Monday night’s contest with Sanborn, which was tied for fourth.

ConVal will host Windham on Thursday in the final home game of the regular season and will travel to Sanborn on Friday for the finale.

With three wins, ConVal would be guaranteed the No. 1 seed for the Division II tournament, which begins May 29.
