Andy’s presents ‘Apollo 13’
WILTON — Andy’s Summer Playhouse opens its newest original musical based on the Apollo 13 moon mission Friday.
Written and directed by DJ Potter, “Apollo 13” features original music co-composed by Potter and Patrick Boutwell, a musician and recording artist who is just releasing his latest album “Model Rocket” with his band The Brother Kite.
The contemporary score includes songs such as “Failure Is Not an Option,” “Too Many Amps,” and “Houston, We Have a Problem.” Twenty-six young actors from the Monadnock region have come together under Potter’s direction to tell this true story about human ingenuity and hope.
The design team of Ruthmarie Tenorio, Aimee LaRue and Mark Haley, with help from the teenagers in Andy’s apprentice program, have created an unique environment and visual setting just right for this story.
Potter says, “I think the only way to tell this story in a theatrical setting is to perform it as a musical. ‘Apollo 13’ is so engulfed in life and death situations, situations that happen in deep space, a place where only about 20 people have gone. How can you not sing about it? And who better to sing those songs than Andy’s kids?”
Potter is Andy’s artistic director and has run the playhouse since 2008. In addition to his work at Andy’s, he has worked both on stage and off throughout New York and New England including Sarah Lawrence College, Courthouse Center for the Arts, La Mama ETC, Target Margin Theater, Granite State Opera, Clark Studio Theater at Lincoln Center and others. Potter is also a composer and guitarist.
Andy’s Summer Playhouse is a nonprofit children’s theater that has been providing youth ages 8-18 the chance to work with professional artists to create energetic and innovate productions for the past 42 years.
