Police chief job down to just one

2 others withdraw; decision to come

Lt. Rance Deware, the officer in charge of the town’s Police Department, is the lone remaining candidate for the newly created job of police chief, after two other finalists pulled their applications.

At their meeting on Wednesday, Select Board members Kevin Boette and Arnie Byam discussed the report from the citizens’ panel that had met with candidates, according to Cindi Hasty, the town’s administrative assistant. The citizens’ panel and an oral board of four law enforcement professionals had narrowed the field of candidates to three. Hasty said board members announced that two of those candidates withdrew after the interviews were conducted, leaving Deware as the only one left.

The third Select Board member, Fred Douglas, was not at the meeting, and the board held off on making a decision on the appointment.

“Unfortunately we did not have a full board last night to discuss the outcome,” Boette, who is the chair of the Select Board, wrote in an email to the Ledger-Transcript. “I feel that it is important to have the full board there for this so I set up one more meeting (work session) for next Wednesday. The decision will be made then.”

The work session, which is a public meeting of the board, will be at 6 p.m. in the town office.

Deware has been Lyndeborough’s officer in charge since June 2012, when he was named to the part-time job after Thomas Burke resigned, charging that selectmen had been interfering with management of the department.

At Town Meeting in March, residents narrowly approved a petition warrant article directing the board to hire a police chief rather than continuing with the officer-in-charge system.

Prior to starting the recruitment process, the Select Board created a job description for a part-time, 32-hour per week police chief position. The board agreed on a salary range of $40,000 to $55,000 for the job.
