Calif. fugitive arrested
Man wanted in L.A. for vehicle theft
NASHUA — In the midst of responding to a routine call Tuesday afternoon, Nashua police arrested a Mason resident on a charge of being a fugitive from justice, after discovering the man was wanted by California police on a four-year-old crime.
Police arrested Alan Coon, 64, of Mason, while Coon was in Nashua on Tuesday afternoon. At 1:42 p.m., Nashua police responded to an anonymous report of a dog in a closed vehicle in a parking lot on Amherst Street. Initially, an animal control officer was sent out to take care of the situation, according to Lt. Michael Moushegian of the Nashua Police Criminal Investigation Division. As a matter of routine, the officer ran the plate of the vehicle with the dog inside, to identify the owner, and attempted to page the owner in the store.
It was at that time the animal control officer discovered that Coon, the owner of the vehicle, was wanted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Coon was charged with stealing a vehicle in California, with a warrant issued for his arrest in November 2009.
The animal control officer requested additional officers to assist at the scene. Police contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which indicated Coon was wanted for prosecution on the stolen vehicle charge. When Nashua patrol officers arrived on scene, they made contact with Coon, and arrested him on charges of being a fugitive from justice, in connection with the Los Angeles charges. The dog was released from the vehicle and was not harmed, noted Moushegian.
Coon was held without bail pending an arraignment in the 9th Circuit Nashua District Division Court on Wednesday, and his expected extradition to California. At his arraignment, Coon was held in lieu of $20,000 cash-only bail, and was transported to Valley Street Jail in Manchester. Within 30 days, the courts will hold a review of the case, at which point it is likely that the state of California will take custody of Coon, said Moushegian.
