Who do we want teaching our kids?
To the editor:
I wanted to let you know how disappointed I was to hear that Kim Wall would not be coming back to South Meadow School after this school year. Although my children have not had her as a teacher, my daughter, Delaney, has had the privilege to work with Wall on the SMS dance team. Wall is an absolute delight. She is so giving of her time. She’s such a positive role model for the children.
Teachers already work long days in the classrooms and then probably bring home a lot of work. Wall does that in addition to leading a group of girls that love to dance with whom she shares a similar love.
I understand the budget didn’t get passed and decisions need to be made regarding cuts, but it’s a terrible shame to see such a talented, bright, energetic, enthusiastic, young role model and teacher like Wall lose her position at SMS due to the cuts. Is there any way the school or district could choose teachers that are near their retirement instead? Perhaps those that don’t have the fire in their belly anymore to teach and help kids. Why not continue to invest in a young and bring teacher like Wall and see it as an investment in the future of the school and the district?
I have worked in the business world for nearly 30 years. Budgets have had to be cut; projections have not been met; decisions have had to be made. Tenure was never a topic of conversation and will almost never be in the business world. Cuts are made to the weakest links. Those that have the least to contribute. Those that have lost their passion for the job. I wish the school systems were able to incorporate a similar plan to cuts.
I know much of this is out of your control, but I thought I should share my concerns about South Meadow School losing such a talented bright teacher like Wall, and my disappointment with the tenor policy that schools have to abide by due to unions, etc.
